The Search Report Nobody Runs
Here is a challenge for any local business owner.
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. Do not type your business name. Ask the question a real customer would ask if they had never heard of you.
Who offers this service near me? What are the best options in my area? Which companies should I compare?
Then look at the answer.
Most businesses have spent years thinking about how they appear in Google. They know roughly where they rank, how many reviews they have, and which keywords bring people to the site. Almost nobody knows how their business appears when the search happens inside an AI answer.
That is a blind spot, and it is getting bigger.
A business can have a good website, strong reviews, years of experience, and respectable Google visibility, then disappear completely when someone asks an AI platform for a recommendation. Or it appears, but for the wrong service, in the wrong location, behind competitors that are smaller and newer, or with information so thin the customer never considers it.
Most business owners have never run that report.
Recognition is not visibility
There is an easy way to test AI visibility badly. Ask ChatGPT what it knows about your business. If it produces a paragraph about you, it feels reassuring. It also answers the wrong question.
Customers rarely start with your name. They start with a problem and ask who can solve it.
Being known when someone asks for you by name is recognition. Being surfaced when they do not know your name yet is visibility.
The commercial value is in the second one.
A plumber does not need ChatGPT to recognize the company name after a customer types it in. They need to know whether the company shows up when someone asks who can fix a burst pipe in Ajax tonight.
A clinic does not need an AI system to repeat what is already on its website. It needs to know what happens when someone asks for a physiotherapist or dentist in the area.
That requires a different kind of test.
What should actually be tested
A useful AI visibility review starts with real discovery questions.
Not vanity prompts. Not your business name. Questions that resemble what a potential customer would type.
Those questions then need to run across more than one platform, because ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity do not produce the same answer.
One may understand the business correctly. Another may surface a competitor. A third may not mention the business at all. One cites your website. Another leans on a directory or review site.
That variation is part of the result.
The goal is not to prove an AI system can find your website if pushed hard enough. The goal is to see what happens under realistic conditions when a customer asks for help.
What the answers can reveal
A proper visibility test exposes problems that are hard to see from inside the business.
The AI may not understand your primary service or your service area. It may associate you with an offer you dropped years ago. It may describe you accurately and still never recommend you. It may surface the same two competitors every time. It may understand you perfectly on one platform and barely recognize you on another.
These are not always website problems in the traditional SEO sense.
They can be connected to unclear site structure, weak entity signals, inconsistent business information, thin service pages, poor geographic clarity, limited third-party corroboration, or a site written for humans and search engines without enough thought for how an AI system has to interpret it.
The first step is finding out what is actually happening.
This is where AEO starts
Answer Engine Optimization is sometimes pitched as the replacement for SEO.
That is not helpful.
Search is not disappearing. It is being reorganized.
Google still matters. Websites still matter. Rankings still matter.
But another layer now sits between the customer and the websites holding the information. The customer asks a question. The AI reads, interprets, compares, summarizes, and sometimes recommends.
The first interaction with your business may no longer be your homepage. It may be one sentence inside an answer generated somewhere else.
So businesses have a new question to measure: what does the machine think we are?
Two audits, two questions
We built two AEO audits because not every business needs the same depth.
AEO Visibility Audit
The AEO Visibility Audit answers the first question:
Are you appearing when relevant customers ask AI systems for businesses like yours?
We test a defined set of realistic prompts across selected major AI platforms and document what happens.
Is the business mentioned?
Are the services and location understood?
Do competitors appear instead?
Does the AI reference your website?
Do the answers change from platform to platform?
The result is a visibility snapshot.
For many businesses that is enough. They want to know whether there is a problem before spending money to fix one.
AEO Complete Audit
The AEO Complete Audit asks why those results are happening.
It goes past the generated answers and examines the signals behind them: website structure, service clarity, entity information, geographic signals, supporting content, technical accessibility, citations, and platform variance.
The output goes well beyond a score. It is a documented diagnosis and a prioritized set of recommendations.
One audit answers: “Can AI find and understand us?”
The other answers: “Why are we getting these results, and what should we change?”
Run the report
Business owners spent years checking Google rankings because being invisible in search meant being invisible to customers.
AI answers deserve the same curiosity.
Not panic. Not another declaration that SEO is dead. Just measurement.
Ask the questions your customers ask. Run them across the platforms they use. Look at who appears, who does not, and what the systems think your business actually does.
You may find everything is working as it should.
You may also find a part of your visibility nobody in the business has ever measured.
Either result is useful.
You cannot improve what you have never looked at.
